Edward Fitzgerald’s translation of Khayyam’s The Rubaiyat in 1859 came to influence quite a many poets and authors who believed in the familiarity of Khayyamian thinking for the Western mind. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was among these influenced poets. The present article attempts to introduce and expound the ideas of Longfellow. It also takes upon itself to analyze the poetical themes in Longfellow's poems through comparing them with those reverberated in Omar Khayyam's poetry. The clarity of diction, musicality of poetry and lucidity of rhetorical devices are among the formal and structural features, common in the poems of both Longfellow and Khayyam. Moreover, death, carpe diem and the fickleness of the world are the motifs that run through the veins of their poetry. The present article, overall, attempts to trace these shared concepts in the poetry of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one of the most celebrated poets in the history of American literature.
