This study explores how the cultural identity is represented
in the light of 9/11 events in Khaled Hossieni's The Kite Runner
and Mohsin Hamid The Reluctant Fundamentalist. The two novels
reflect the experiences of two Muslims from Afghanistan and
Pakistan who immigrate to the United States. Both of the
protagonists are affected by their original cultural background,
western background, and their interaction with surrounding
environment. Considering these three aspects, this study aims to
reveal how their identities develop in the context of diasporic
discourse. The discussion of post-colonialism becomes relevant
here, as the two protagonists move from their third world countries
to the first world represented by America. Due to this movement,
the two writers discuss the relationship between the colonizer and
the colonized within American imperialism and hegemony, and its
reinforcement after 9/11. Hybridity is an essential element in this
discussion as it is the outcome of colonized identity when the past
is mixed with the changes brought by the colonial power. Thus,
hybridity dissolves the concepts of "purity" and "authenticity" of
the nations, which is the core of colonial debate.
