Medical science is constantly adapting to new technologies. Over the past two
decades, the Internet has created a paradigm shift in how health care works, and with
the advent of social media in medicine, there has been a new shift between patients and
physicians and other health actors. Patients work on social media to find health
information, support online groups, discuss in forums, share experiences and describe
events related to the course of their illness. The present article, with the help of
documentary method and SWOT technique, descriptively evaluates the role of social
media in the field of health and has reviewed the literature and identified typology,
functions, strengths and weaknesses, and limitations of using social networks in the
field of health. The findings show that most of the organizations active in the field of
health care do not yet have the appropriate infrastructure to take advantage of the
capabilities of this new technology; This inefficiency is primarily due to the high
reliance of health care on the traditional patient-physician interaction; However, the
methods discussed in this article show that with the development and spread of virtual
media and social networks among the public, changes can be made in this approach.
