Sheet soil erosion is one of the main processes leading to soil degradation. Soil erosion increases the risk of flood, in rivers and water reservoirs, and deterioration of natural ecosystems. Therefore, to achieve a better understanding of the problem collecting reliable data could have a critical role. Zariwar Lake has faced some ecological challenges such as improper land use, and cultivation on steeply sloping land, which could be related to water resources pollution and some ecological outcomes. Therefore, the current study aims to examine surface erosion in Zariwar Lake catchment with regard to cultivation and forest in different geographical directions of the slope by using a dendrogeomorphological approach on exposed Quercus Brantii root. The results indicated that the rate of soil erosion was four times greater for cultivation area (average erosion rate: 2.43 mm per year) in comparison with forest area (average erosion rate: 0.60 mm per year). According to the effects of type of land use on erosion rate, the hypothesis of mean equality in cultivation and forest use was rejected. On the other hand, the type of land use significantly affected the mean rate of annual surface erosion in the catchment study area. The effect of different geographical directions on the mean annual erosion rate in the Zariwar Lake catchment showed that the different geographical directions do not affect the mean annual sheet erosion rate . The importance of forest and natural covering in the conservation of soil and its prevention role was shown by comparing erosion rates
