The large number of nineteenth-century novels whose title is a proper name has been interpreted by some critics (Edelman, Wilwerth and Martens) as a quest for identity. Aline-Ali written by Andre Leo in 1869 is one of the examples of this type of novel, whose author told the story of the character of the same name. The present article will first address this novel by the difference that distinguishes it from other novels in this hand by the same author and then study the relationship between the title of the novel and its content as well as the effect produced by this onomastic choice on the reading. A relevant question is whether the title of the novel leads the reader to an identity search of a sexual nature and to deduce the report that the novelist maintains between the title and its male pseudonym. To do this, we must first study the status of the author-woman in the social context of the nineteenth century, then the reasons for the choice of male pseudonyms to publish his works. Then, we will address the issue of title in its phonetic characteristics, its relationship to the content of the novel and the quest for identity it engages. We will follow the onomastic methodology which also covers the titrological analyzes.
