The act of suicide is originally complex and the risk factors are multiple: They may be psychosocial (Professional problem, breakdown, isolation, loss, grief, precariousness, family climate…) or relate to the subject himself (Psychiatric illness, trauma, poor self-esteem, ill-treatment, poor health…), the list is not exhaustive. This act is present in both present and fictional life. Thus, it happens that an author directs his character towards a fatal end to which he resigns contentment. Phedre, the summit of the tragedy of Racine, is stained not only with the blood of Hyppolite but also with the amorous heroine who will kill herself at the end of the play. At first sight, the cause of the suicide of Phedre seems clear: The bad conscience with regard to the death of the man she loved passionately. But it has, in fact, deeper causes. It is a psychological case that brings together the links of a love that ends in catastrophe. We will study the birth of this fatal love, its emotional trajectory and the psychological details that lead to the death of the protagonists. It is obvious that we are going to have recourse to the psychoanalytic method to study profoundly the causes of the suicide of the heroine. In fact, she is leaded to death because of the factors and conditions that influence the author's mind and his unconscious. This analysis will lead us to clarify the strong influence of Jansenism and absolute monarchy on the mentality of the author which leads to Racine's internal conflict. Indeed, this intrapsychic conflict will result in the weakness of the heroes and their ideological resignation.
