Background: There are limited studies that have examined the effect of electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) on muscle growth factors in athletes during the rehabilitation period. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of resistance training and electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) on serum levels of some muscle growth factors in male athletes after anterior cruciate ligament surgery. Methods: 20 volunteers were randomly divided into 2 groups of resistance training plus EMS and resistance training. Subjects in both groups performed 2-4 sets of resistance training movements with an intensity of 30-70% of ten repetitions maximum for 12 weeks. The subjects in the resistance training plus EMS group performed exercise movements with electrical stimulation at 35-70 Hz. Blood samples were collected before and 48 hours after the last training session and used to measure peroxisome gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and myostatin levels.Findings: The results showed that 12 weeks of resistance training plus EMS significantly increased the serum concentration of IGF-1 and significantly decreased the serum levels of myostatin in the post-test compared to the pre-test. The results also showed that EMS training did not have a significant effect on serum PGC-1α concentration. Furthermore, the intergroup comparison showed that resistance training plus EMS increased the concentration of IGF-1 compared to the resistance training group. Conclusion: Overall, the results showed that EMS training leads to changes in serum myostatin and IGF-1 levels, which is of particular importance compared to the traditional resistance training.
