Recent studies have identified distorted language patterns in mildly depressed patients. In the present study, a linguistic approach was used as an additional diagnostic key to understand clinical variability by determining speech patterns related to clinical symptoms in patients with mild depression. Among the students of Allameh Tabatabai University, 28 participants were selected by purposive sampling. The mildly depressed group using the Beck depression test (Beck, Steer and Brown 1996) and based on the diagnostic criteria of the 10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (1992) and the normal group according to the absence of mental illness based on the list of symptoms of mental disorders (Drogatis, Limpen) and Covey 1973) were selected. Textual data were collected using McAdams (1995) unstructured interview and analyzed by content analysis method. From the analysis of the morphological structure of the linguistic data of mildly depressed patients, more negative emotional words, less positive emotional words, less lexical richness and more use of past tense verbs were obtained. The research findings indicate that mild depression causes significant changes in the language structure of depressed patients.
