چکیده:
Libertarians on the one hand hold that free will is incompatible with determinism, and on the other hand free will is real and can be realized even in indeterministic conditions. Therefore, libertarianism tries to show that firstly how determinism and free will are incompatible and secondly how free will can be possible in an indeterministic world. The second challenge seems to be more difficult than the first one, since in indeterministic conditions agent's actions and choices would seem to be matter of luck and not under control of the agent. Most of traditional libertarians had tried to solve these problems by appealing to non-natural factors. However, some people like Robert Kane have presented their solutions without any explicit metaphysical presupposition. They believe that modern sciences can resolve the problem of free well. In this essay, we will firstly explore Robert Kane's ideas and then try to take a critical view on it
خلاصه ماشینی:
To prove his claim, he formulates his argument based on what has been previously stated: If 1- free will requires 2- that the ultimate responsibility for our will, desires, and actions belongs to us, then it requires 3- that there exist will-setting actions in our lives which, in turn, must 4- satisfy the plurality conditions.
(In this example, the agent could have acted in other ways intentionally, rationally, and voluntarily, meaning he had possible alternatives at his disposal) Given the above example, the argument is now completed as follows: If 1- free will requires 2- that the ultimate responsibility for our will, desires, and actions belongs to us, then it requires 3- that there exist will-setting actions in our lives which, in turn, must 4- satisfy the plurality conditions.
Therefore, the agent is not responsible for the first free choice (freely, under the conditions desired by Kane) that stems from his voluntary effort.
Criticisms of Kane in response to the question of the existence of free will in a natural structure Manuel Vargas 1 , one of the libertarian critics, says that in Kane's theory, self-constituted actions are the result of a specific type of indeterministic processes in the brain; such a chaotic state is created as a result of indeterministic conditions at a low level (for example, the quantum level) in the brain.
