Ethan Colbert, one of the prominent contemporary Orientalists who has a great interest in researching the subject of Shia Hadith, has addressed in an article the history of the collection and compilation of Shia Hadith and its thematic typology in the early centuries. This article contains positive points, including the comprehensiveness of the report despite its brevity and a positive view of the history of the compilation of Shia works and its connection to the period of the issuance of hadiths. Among Colbert's critiquable foundations in this article, which have led to some incorrect conclusions, are the acceptance of the evolutionary hypothesis of the history of Shia development, excessive emphasis on the polemical nature of hadith, and a wrong depiction of the position and extent of the influence of Taqiyya on Shia teachings. Colbert's foundations and a number of his opinions, which are often resulting from belief in the above foundations, have been critiqued and reviewed after presenting the translation of the article.
