چکیده:
In this article, a new and complete definition of 'new religious movements,' based on past definitions, is presented. While the author contemplates the necessities of providing such a definition, they realize that every necessity is grappled with a great challenge within itself. Nevertheless, the author proceeds to examine and organize past definitions and, based on the methods of 'definition by thematic analysis' and 'definition by reference to instances,' provides two different explanations of new religious movements. Finally, the author demonstrates that there are only two ways to understand the nature of new religious movements: providing a specific and case-based definition observing pairs of spiritual movements, which can well explain and clarify the sample group but lacks comprehensiveness over external instances; and the other is providing a general and universal definition observing the certainties of sects. This option, which is nothing more than the integration of the two methods of thematic analysis and reference to instances, is commendable in its attempt to prove comprehensiveness over external instances and can satisfactorily answer many of the challenges of providing a definition.
