In the primary sources of Hadith for both sects, there are narrations in which the Infallibles (AS) have used the phrase 'Laysa Minna' (He is not from us). The Muhaddithin of both sects have differences regarding the interpretation of what the Infallibles (AS) intended by this expression. In fact, the meaning of this phrase is 'Laysa min Shi'atina' (He is not from our Shi'a), which is understood from the context of the narrations and verses. In some other narrations, the application of the expression 'Minna' is the true Shi'a. In some other narrations, this phrase comes to mean exiting from Islam, where Islam in these narrations means submission and following, rather than Islam in its technical sense. In all these cases, the primary intention of the Infallibles (AS) from this phrase is 'loyalty to the Wilayah and following the Infallibles (AS),' and the interpretation of some Sunni Muhaddithin of this phrase as 'He is not of our character and our way' is incorrect.

In Shia Hadiths, sometimes "Laysa minna" has been paraphrased, and from this paraphrasing, one can arrive at the meaning of "Laysa minna" according to the view of the narrators; for example, Sheikh Saduq in the book al-Muqni' has narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (as): «ليس منا من لم يُصَلّ صلاة اليل; whoever does not perform the night prayer is not from us» (Ibn Babawayh, al-Muqni', 1415: 131), and Sheikh Mufid, who is later than Sheikh Saduq, has presented "Laysa minna" in this Hadith as "Laysa min Shi'atina," meaning "is not of our Shi'a" (Mufid, al-Muqni'ah, 1413: 119).
