The Creation and Expansion of Civilization from Keyumars to Jamshid in Ferdowsi's Shahnameh 1 Dr. Reza Ashrafzadeh Professor of Persian Language and Literature, Islamic Azad University, Mashhad Branch Molouk Barati Master's Degree Student (Received date: 89/8/10, Approval date: 90/3/12) Abstract The Book of God, historical narratives, the Abu Mansuri Shahnameh, the Avesta, and oral traditions are the sources that the wise Ferdowsi used in composing his great work.
The wise Ferdowsi considers the introduction of agriculture to be related to the production of bread, the most important food of all human eras, and says thus: He directed the water to the stream and to the cultivation; through prosperity, he shortened the toil He increased the livelihood of the people; by scattering seeds, cultivating, and reaping; so that everyone might harvest their own bread and know their own sustenance (Ibid: 30) Hunting animals and preparing clothing from their skins are signs of civilization during the reign of Hushang.
When the Divan saw his deeds, they drew their necks from his words When Tahmuras became aware of their actions, he was enraged and broke their market; from them he took two benefits, with enchantment he bound others, with a heavy mace he made them low; they were dragged away exhausted and bound, humiliated; at that time they begged for their lives, saying: do not kill us so that we may teach you two arts, so that writing may become useful to you; they taught it to Khosrow, and they sold his heart like the sun (Khaleqi, 1386: 371) It is through the light of script that today we can know how the way of thinking and the lifestyle of ancient peoples were a thousand years ago.
