چکیده:
Research that has examined the vowel system of the Azerbaijani Turkic language so far has focused on the phonological status of vowels. Most of these studies agree on simple vowels, but there is a disagreement regarding complex vowels. The present research aims to first provide a precise phonetic description of the vowel system of this language by more closely examining the acoustic characteristics of Azerbaijani vowels (specifically the Tabrizi dialect). To this end, 6 Azerbaijani speakers, three men and three women, aged 30-40, were asked to pronounce a number of Azerbaijani words containing simple and complex vowels. The difference in the acoustic characteristics of simple and complex vowels for male and female speakers was investigated by comparing their laboratory speech. The results obtained approximately confirm the findings of previous studies regarding the characteristics of 9 simple Azerbaijani vowels. However, contrary to the conclusions of most previous studies regarding complex vowels, the acoustic evidence obtained from this research definitively confirms the existence of 7 complex vowels in the Azerbaijani vowel system. Of course, the acoustic data only show the existence of phonetic complex vowels. Therefore, a phonological investigation was also conducted regarding these vowels. Based on the results of this investigation, it appears that these complex vowels do not exist as separate phonemes in the phonological system of the Azerbaijani language. In other words, the results do not confirm the existence of phonological complex vowels in the Azerbaijani language.

A Phonological Study of the Vowel System of the Azeri Language: Tabrizi Dialect Niloufar Naji MA in Linguistics, Allameh Tabataba'i University Nilourafnj9@gmail.
In the classification of languages in terms of word structure, Azerbaijani Turkic and generally the Ural-Altaic language family fall into the group of agglutinative 1 languages.
2. Background of research conducted on the vowel system of Azerbaijani Turkic To date, many studies have been conducted on the phonological system of the Azeri language (Hesabgar, 1992; Marimi, 1996; Salimi, 1976; Farzaneh, 1965; Fattahi, 1996).
+back -back +rounded -rounded +rounded -rounded u ɯ y i +close o œ e -mid open -mid close ɑ æ +open Table 1: Vowels of the Azeri Turkic language (taken from Fattahi, 1996) agglutinative In the past, some researchers considered the vowels / æ/ and / e/ (which are allophones in Turkish) to be allophones of a single phoneme, but now, as Hesabgar (1992) has shown using minimal pairs, we know that these two sounds are distinct phonemes in Azerbaijani dialects.
The purpose of conducting this research is to draw a vowel chart and determine the vowel system of the Azeri language (Tabriz dialect) using precise phonetic tools, which will help us confirm or reject the existence of complex vowels based on objective evidence.
However, the evidence obtained from these investigations clearly shows that in addition to 9 simple vowels, the Azerbaijani language also possesses 7 diphthongs.
In the present research, speakers were asked to pronounce the Azerbaijani equivalent of the word "bu" (boo), which was Marimi's (ibid) example for the diphthong /ij/.
