Construction Grammar Textbook; edited by Thomas Hoffman and Grimm Trusdal 1 ; 2013 Zaniar Naghshbandi The expansion of the scope of influence of the fundamental concepts of the cognitive linguistics school from the domain of semantics to syntactic structures led to the emergence of cognitive syntactic approaches in the second half of the 1980s.
Based on this method of representing linguistic competence in generative linguistics, linguistic structures larger than a word cannot possess unique and arbitrary features; because these structures arise by applying general rules present in various competence domains to the lexical units present in the lexicon and, therefore, neither at their syntactic level nor at their semantic level will any unique feature logically exist 1 In this regard, only Ronald Langacker (1987) introduces his cognitive syntactic approach under the title of Cognitive Grammar .
Croft and Cruse (2004) believe that the various formulations of Construction Grammar all share three general principles: the belief in the independent nature of linguistic constructions as symbolic units that have arisen from the bond between linguistic form and its corresponding meaning; the belief in the existence of a uniform method for representing the internal structure of linguistic constructions; and finally, acknowledging the existence of a kind of systematic and networked relationship between the linguistic constructions that constitute the grammar of a language.
In this chapter, Broccias, in addition to addressing other topics related to cognitive grammar, specifically analyzes the determining characteristics of linguistic constructions and the position of 1 of their foundations in this constructionist approach.
