چکیده:
In this study the common usage of the Persian words "joft" and "yoogh" (mean two or pair in agricultural contexts)، along with their varied pronunciations has been shown. Old documents and dialectal usages of the two words show that both of them signify two or pair، that they have been used interchangeably، and that sometimes both of them have the same pronunciation. Also، the history of their phonological development reveals their common root. Considering the common root and common meaning of the two words، one mistake in writing in several poems has been emended.

In other regions, the word 'jaft' is used more explicitly with different dialects to determine the area of a field or cultivable land; in Lorestan, «جفت jeft واحدیبرای بذرافشانی ر زراعت که معال شش تا هشت هکتار زمین است»(Askari Alam, 1384:137) refers to the amount of land that a farmer plants and harvests, which is called 'jaft' (Ibid, 13), and in Char Lang Bakhtiari, the unit of area is called 'jaftga' (Sarlak, 1381:98).
Just as in the texts Persian and contemporary Iranian dialects use the word 'jaft' to determine land area; in Vendidad, Fargard 13, 'yuj' is also used as a feminine noun 'yujyasti' to determine area and its corresponding distance, which Dar Mastater considers equal to 16000 steps (Ibid, 1395).
