Territorial disputes exist among all eight countries bordering the Persian Gulf, but the issue of the United Arab Emirates' claims regarding the three Iranian islands—Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa—has become one of the most controversial of these disputes. The reasons for this are, firstly, the very serious and continuous pursuit by the UAE in these claims; secondly, the irresponsible support of Arab countries—especially members of the Gulf Cooperation Council; and thirdly, the mischief of extra-regional powers. The issue of sovereignty over the three islands has various legal and political dimensions, and this article seeks to examine one of the political dimensions of this issue, namely the process of the UAE's pursuit to prove its claim of ownership and sovereignty over these islands throughout the very short history of the formation of this country, from 1971 AD to the present. This article will demonstrate how, during this short period, the UAE has transformed an unrealistic claim from a matter between Iran and one of the emirates of the UAE into an almost international issue.
