"ارسطو که سخنانش برای مدت هزار سال اصل موضوعه فلسفی نیمه غربی اوراسیا تلقی میشد،تحت تأثیر افلاطون معتقد بود افلاک به دو بخش زیر فلک ماه-یعنی زمین-و فلک فوق قمری-یعنی آسمانها-تقسیم میشوند که تغییر تنها در اولی راه داشت و دومی از آن مصون بود.
سنت آگوستین نیز زمانی که کتاب مشهور خود را نوشت و آن را به نام آخرین شاه ساسانی(یزدگرد)شهر خدا نامید،محیط آرمانشهر خویش را از دگرگونی مصون دانست به این ترتیب در کل قرون وسطا این ثبات و پایداری وایستایی بود که ستوده میشد،و تغییر و حرکت همارز تباهی و فساد و مرگ در نظر گرفته میشد.
بروز طاعونی که در جهان تغییر ناپذیر و ایستای اروپاییان قرون سیزده و چهارده،از هر چهار تن یک نفر را قربانی کرد،کشف قاره آمریکا و درک اینکه ماجراجویی و دل به دریا زدن و تجربه انقلابی اجتماعی همچون آنچه که اسپانیا تجربهاش کرد،همواره هم زیانمند نیست،و ترجمه متون خاوری که نگرش خوشبینانه مردم شرق را در مورد آینده و دگرگونی تاریخ بیان میکرد،همه و همه در این دگردیسی موثر بودند.
در قرن هجدهم که به گمان من اوج فعالیت فکری برای صورتبندی پویایی و حرکت است،دو نگرش رقیب در مورد تاریخ زمین پدید آمد:نگرشی که به همسان انگاری (Universalism) شهرت یافت و به ویژه توسط زمینشناس انگلیسی جیمز هاتن تبلیغ میشد،و رویکردی که فاجعه انگاری (Catastrophism) نام داشت و مدافع اصلیاش بارون کوویه فرانسوی بود.
چرا که از سویی برای توجیه شرایط نابسامان شوروی در نیمه نخست قرن بیستم، محافظهکاری داروین را وامگیری کرده بود،و از سوی دیگر برای حفظ آرمان صدور انقلاب،پارههایی از برداشتهای رادیکال مارکس در مورد دگرگونی را نیز برگرفته بود،و این عارضهای بود که پس از آن در بسیاری از نظامهای سیاسی مشابه تکرار شد."
