این اندیشه که هنر باید دارای ویژگیهای بخصوصی باشد که باعث شود تا اثر هنری در جایگاهی فراتر از هر چیز دیگر در جهان قرار گیرد و به این ترتیب بتواند خود را از تمامی تعهدات معمول برای توجیه خودش آزاد سازد،طی 300 سال گذشته چنان بهطور عمیق و به کمک قلمهای لشکری از نویسندگان هنری ریشه دوانده که اکنون به تلاشهای قابل توجهی نیاز است تا بتوان در این قلمرو راه دیگری را نیز باز کرد.
هنر همه آن چیزهایی است که ما به واسطه این واژه میشناسیم؛زیرا ما بنا به دلایلی آنها را جالب توجه،مهیج،آموزنده یا شاد میپنداریم اما از آنجا که انسانها برحسب تجربیات خود اشیای متفاوتی را جالب توجه، مهیج،آموزنده و شاد میدانند،نتیجه این میشود که یک اعلام نظر بسیار مطرح و معلم منشانه میگوید«این هنر است!»ادعایی سطحی(از این جهت که فقط دلالت بر این دارد که موضوع مورد نظر در یک موزه به نمایش درآمده)یا متکبرانه،به این ترتیب که در آن فرض اصلی بر این مبنا قرار داده شده است که آن چیزی که در نظر من جالب توجه است،بهطور خودکار برای دیگران نیز همین خاصیت را دارد."
