METHOD

The athletic identity questionnaire (Brewer, 1993) comprising four subscales‌ of‌ self-identity, social identity, exclusivity, and negative affectivity was used to collect data. Mean and standard deviation were used in descriptive statistics and k-s test, independent t, and Mann-Whitney U-test‌ were‌ used‌ to determine data normality and‌ social‌ identity‌ differences between team and individual athletes in the significance level of p < 0.05 in the inferential statistics.

RESULTS

The results indicated‌ that‌ the‌ type of sport affects the social identity. Social‌ identity‌ is of the significant difference in the fields of weightlifting and volleyball, respectively, and the variable of type of‌ sport‌ affects‌ the social identity. Other findings revealed that the individual and‌ team sports were significantly of a higher social identity.

CONCLUSIONS

To this group of elite athletes, these findings appear‌ to‌ be‌ reasonable and justifiable.
