SALABAT JANG'S FIRST WAR WITH THE PESHW A TRANSLATED FROM A FRENCH MANUSCRIPT By SIR JADUNATH SARKAR After the violent deaths of N djir Jang ('A$af J dh •s second son and immediate successor) and Muiaffar Jang (his daughter:'s son), Sayyid Mubammad Khdn (his third son, entitled Saldbat Jang and Amir al-Mamalik, was placed on the gaddi of Hyderabad by the French corps under Bussy, at Lakka-Reddipalli ( south of Kurnool city), on 13th February 1751 (New Calendar).
In this campaign the French with their firearms subdued the Marathas: on the night of 3rd December in particular, while there was a total eclipse of the moon, they made a surprise attack on the enemy's force and slew many of them.
His attendants [mondeJ, on our arrival, had only time to mount their horses exactly as they were, and to save themselves on bare feet, and travel three kos in that state in order to go and join their main camp.
The Nawab had caused his kettle-drums to be beaten for retreat, so that on re-entering the camp we found the tents down and the animals ready for departure: probably Salabat Jang had apprehended some alarms from the Marathas 1.
The enemy came to attack our sepoys who received them with great discharges of muskets and cannon ; they had, however, several wounded.
The day before his arrival a detachment of SO men had been sent [from our camp] to him.
