Abstract:
In the early third century AD, a new powerful monarchy was established with the efforts of Ardeshir on the Iranian plateau, the main center of which was Fars state. He managed in a decisive victory to defeat the fourth Ardavan of the Parthians. This historic event was a new chapter to a new dynasty and an end to the political rule of the Parthians who ruled Iranian plateau for nearly five centuries. Shapur I, at the outset, faced a major threat and challenge from his western neighbor. In other words, when he came to power, "the Romans" were one of the great world powers of the time, which had a common border with the Sassanid Empire. Hence, the military confrontation between the two great powers was not unexpected. Therefore, to build a strong and unified army for the fulfilling of Sassanid political and military intentions and confronting the Roman Empire was considered a must.
The study, applying a descriptive-analytical method and using historical sources, described and interpreted Shapur I the Great’s military conflicts against Romans at the western borders of the Sassanid Empire. It then discussed the importance and role of Armenia in intensifying wars and worsening the relationship between the two great powers
