Abstract:
The high status of Imamate, along with the differing views of Islamic thinkers regarding it, motivated the author to address in the following article the 'Examination and Critique of the Process of Appointing an Imam in the Views of Qadi Adud al-Din al-Iji and Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani.' These two theologians have proposed four methods for how an Imam is chosen, some of which are shared and in others there is disagreement; those four methods are: Nass (divine designation), Bay'ah (allegiance) of Ahl al-Hall wal-Aqd, Shura (consultation), and Ghalaba (dominance/force). The aforementioned methods are accompanied by criticisms. The existence of Nass for an Imam is a matter of dispute among Sunni scholars. Similarly, their reliance on Bay'ah is rejected due to the lack of consensus (Ijma) of the Ahl al-Hall wal-Aqd regarding the first three caliphs. The appointment of a successor through the first two caliphs or via Shura also contradicts the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH); likewise, the method of Ghalaba and seizure of power contradicts the Quran, Sunnah, and reason.
