Abstract:

The thought of 'Mahdism' is considered one of the important ideas in the religion of Islam and especially Shiism, and for this reason, Shiites have always waited for the appearance of Mahdi at various times. This expectation has caused rituals to emerge among Shiites and manifest in the form of symbolic actions and places. Since these rituals are performed collectively and indicate the extension of the belief in 'Mahdiism' from the realm of individual insight of Shiites to the realm of their social behavior, they fall within the scope of the social history of Shiites. The present research aims, using a descriptive-analytical method and the application of library studies, to examine the rituals of waiting for the appearance of Mahdi from the 4th to the late 11th century AH in various parts of the Islamic world and to interpret and analyze them within the framework of symbolism or the semiotics of Shiite communities.

(Yaqubi, 1356: 28) Ibn al-Athir (555-637 AH), under the events of the year 260 AH and while explaining the death of Imam al-Hasan al-Askari (as), writes: He was one of the Twelver Shiite Imams and the father of "Muhammad," whom (the Shiites) believe went into occultation in the cellar of Samarra and are waiting for his appearance. d. : 42) He continues writing: In Hilla, "they have built a shrine and their belief is that the Imam al-Muntazar al-Mahdi, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Askari, who went into occultation in Samarra in the year 260, will emerge from there again.
