Abstract:
Waqf has played an important role in intricately linking the economic and social institutions of cities, and Islamic insight has been influential in the construction of many urban facilities in Iran, such as caravanserais; these were shaped and developed alongside the growth of cities in accordance with the social, economic, and political conditions of different historical periods. The endowed status of some of them, like other economic and social elements of the city, caused religious beliefs in society to become linked to economic activities in an institutionalized manner. Therefore, in this research, through a case study of the endowed caravanserais of the city of Amol, this entanglement of religious beliefs and economic activities of Iranian cities is discussed and examined.

Many of the endowments in the city of Amol (mosques, shrines, holy sites, baths, caravanserais, and shops) are located together as a complex, often in the commercial section (bazaar) and within the old fabric of the city, and much of their income has been allocated to the mourning of Imam Hussain( whose reason can be attributed to the role of Shiism in directing the endowments of this city.

Conclusion In the past, the caravanserais of the city of Amol were located in the bazaar or on the communication and commercial routes of Iranian cities, and in addition to their economic function, they were always a place for acquaintance and the exchange of information and issues related to the market and Iranian society.
