Quran and Hadith: Facial Expression and Non-verbal Communication in Quranic Teachings Ali Lotfi Faculty Member of Imam Hussain University (peace be upon him) Date Received: 2019/10/23 - Date Accepted: 2019/04/20 Abstract Facial expression is considered the most meaningful part of the entire body.
In Quranic teachings, non-verbal communications such as anger, wrath, fury, and gaze have been explicitly or implicitly regarded as important.
Similarly, weeping expresses the dominance of emotions and feelings, which in Quranic teachings are referred to as moments of longing and love, sorrow and regret, deception and fraud, or remorse and repentance; and laughing is a non-verbal communication expressing freshness and joy.
Regardless of whom the verse in question is pointing toward, it is observed that the Quran considers the use of the face and its various expressions to be one of the non-verbal behavioral and communicative skills.
To protect humans from behavioral impurities resulting from inappropriate mixing of men and women and the emergence of rebellious sexual instinct emotions, God has expressed a clear command to avoid damage to interpersonal and social communications between men and women, first saying to men: قل لّلمؤمنین یغضّوا من أبصارهم و یحفظوا فروجهم ذلک أزکی لهم إنّ اللّه خبیر بما یصنعون (An-Nur 30/); "Tell the believing men: (lower their gaze and guard their chastity; that is purer for them; for indeed, Allah is Aware of what they do)".
According to the teachings of the Quran, tears that fall from a person of free will can itself be a cause for establishing non-verbal communication.
