Abstract:
The inception of the uprising of Mukhtār Thaqafī in 66/685 and the changes that took place in the socio-political climate of Kūfa due to this uprising، gave the opportunity to Iranians residing in Kūfa to be able for the first time after the advent of Islam to hold a considerable presence and play a substantial role in the socio-political events during and after the uprising in the Iraq region. Before the inception of the uprising of Mukhtār in Kūfa and other Islamic regions، the Iranians did not enjoy a suitable social status and due to uprising of Mukhtār and the changes that took place in their socio-economic situation، the nobles and Arabs of Kūfa were prompted to react. That was because up to that time the nobles and Arabs of Kūfa enjoyed certain privileges that، as it was customary in the then society، the non-Arabs were not entitled to use، and that the Iranians had achieved those privileges in that period of time. In this article، we intend to address the reasons for the reactions of the nobles and Arabs of Kūfa towards the Iranians in the uprising of Mukhtār and its impacts on the Persians and Mukhtār Thaqafī’s achieving prosperity or sustaining loss.
Machine summary:
The city of Kufa was composed of various clans and tribes, and economically, this city enjoyed a better position compared to other cities in Iraq; therefore, in the uprising of Mukhtar al-Thaqafi, the maximum presence of Iranians residing in Kufa holds a special place in their economic and social dimension; because Iranians, in terms of economy and social status, did not have an appropriate situation in the regions under Umayyad rule, especially Kufa (Ibn Abd Rabbih, 2001, 3/ 356).
Following the dissatisfaction of the nobles of Kufa with Mukhtar, the presence of Iranians alongside Mukhtar, the new status and position that Iranians had gained in the city of Kufa, and the fruitless efforts of the Arabs to separate the Iranians from Mukhtar or to cause a rebellion and the defeat of Mukhtar, this time Shabath ibn Rabi'ah, who was considered one of the main representatives and opponents of Mukhtar's policies regarding giving value to Iranians, took advantage of the new opportunity created by the power of the Zubayrids in the region.
" After Shabath ibn Rabi'ah was brought to Mus'ab, other nobles and leaders of Kufa also appeared at Mus'ab's court to complain and protest, saying: We all agree to oppose Mukhtar, and they declared the reason for their opposition, unity, and enmity against Mukhtar and his uprising to be the very presence of the Iranians; because they believed that due to Mukhtar's policies, this liberated force had become dominant over the Arabs.
