Abstract:
Establishing a cohesive and united Muslim community in today’s world, considering the prevailing global conditions, is an undeniable necessity and need. The notion of the ummah wāḥidah (single unified community) serves as the organizing and central concept for all Muslims. The formation of this concept within the contemporary international system possesses characteristics such as globalization, which is analyzed in the present study. The presence of Muslim nation-states and their fragmented and isolated actions have led to ambiguity in the concept of the Islamic ummah. The establishment of the ummah wāḥidah is emphasized in the Noble Qurʾān and the teachings derived from the sīrah of the maʿṣūmīn (infallibles, peace be upon them). According to both major Islamic sources—Qurʾānic verses and ḥadīths—the formation of the ummah is one of Islam’s most important projects. This matter must not be neglected in the contemporary period. Both the verses and the traditions have sought to devise mechanisms for the founding of the Islamic ummah. These mechanisms can be extracted and implemented even in the contemporary era to manifest aspects of the ummah’s establishment so that the concept of the Islamic ummah does not become ambiguous. It appears that in answering the question of how the Islamic ummah can be formed, one must refer to the intellectual and gradual decline of this concept. In a globalized international system where Islamic actors exist as separate nation-states, the establishment of the ummah is not feasible. Rather, the formation of Islamic unions and moving towards convergence among Islamic countries may serve as an alternative. This process has previously been pursued through the establishment of organizations like the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and is now on the agenda of countries like Malaysia through the establishment of an Islamic alliance.

In the commentary of "Ala al-Rahman fi Tafsir al-Quran" under this noble verse, citing the mutawatir Hadith al-Thaqalayn, it is stated that the manifestation of "Habl Allah" (the rope of Allah), which prevents falling into the pit of misguidance and error, are the two weighty treasures, namely the Book of God and the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (PBUH).
" A noteworthy point in this verse is the use of the word "Habl" (rope) instead of "Quran," "Islam," "Ahl al-Bayt (AS)," or similar terms; which seems that considering the linguistic meaning of "Habl" as a rope, and that a person caught in the well of misguidance and error is saved by holding onto it; the salvation of a divided Ummah whose life is endangered by division lies in holding onto unity of word.
By reflecting on what has been stated regarding the concept of "Ummah Wahidah" in the verses of the Holy Qur'an, it can be understood that Islam is presented as a universal religion and the Qur'an as the final book; a book whose teachings address the entire human community for general guidance and the delivery of the Divine message; and without regard to man-made borders and racial, ethnic, linguistic, and gender differences among Muslims, it names them "Ummah Wahidah" and has a special view on the necessity of unity and the creation of this united Islamic Ummah.
