Abstract:
With the remarkable advancements in information and communication technology, e-learning has increasingly been accepted as an alternative and complementary teaching method in educational systems worldwide. This educational approach, especially during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, has demonstrated its importance and position more than ever and has provided new opportunities to continue the process of education and learning. However, while e-learning brings many advantages such as temporal and spatial flexibility, access to diverse educational resources, and cost reduction, it has also brought challenges that can affect various dimensions of mental health, motivation levels, and the quality of students' social interactions. This comprehensive review article examines the various impacts of e-learning on these three vital areas. In the mental health section, issues such as stress, anxiety, loneliness, and feelings of isolation that may arise as a result of the lack of face-to-face interactions and long hours of working with digital tools are addressed. Additionally, the impact of e-learning on students' academic motivation, including factors such as self-efficacy, a sense of ownership in learning, and the need for self-regulation in online environments, is analyzed. Finally, how the nature of student interactions with peers and teachers changes in cyberspace, including the opportunities and limitations of online communication and its impact on the development of social skills, is discussed. This review, with the aim of providing a comprehensive and analytical perspective, helps educational managers, teachers, and parents to implement more effective solutions to optimize students' learning experiences in this context and prevent potential challenges. The results of this review show that to fully exploit the potentials of e-learning and reduce its negative effects, there is a need for purposeful instructional designs, psychological and social supports, and the development of digital literacy among all stakeholders.
