Abstract:
Riddles are among the most beautiful parts of folk literature, as their blend with memories and curiosity makes them more prominent than other components of a nation's folklore. Especially among Turkic speakers, riddles hold a very special position. 'Tapmaca' is the famous and accepted title for riddles among Turkic speakers, which is popular in verse and prose, presented in various gatherings, and in addition to the entertainment aspect, it brings creativity, memory strengthening, and intelligence assessment. Numerous names for riddles in different regions of Azerbaijan include Tapmaca, Tapishmaq, Mataq, Bilmece, Jummaq, Pahalmaja, and Baglashma (between two Ashiqs). This article examines and analyzes Turkic riddles using the content analysis method and library tools. The result of this essay shows that Turkic riddles can be classified into 15 categories: 1. Edibles (trees, fruits, vegetables), 2. Nature and natural phenomena, 3. Living beings (humans, birds, insects, animals), 4. Humans and their body parts, 5. Animal products and their maintenance tools, 6. Household items (house, tent, and living place), 7. Weapons and ammunition, 8. Foodstuffs and meals, 9. Clothing, cosmetics, and decorations, 10. Village, agriculture, and its necessities, 11. Musical instruments, 12. General information, 13. Inanimate objects and abstract subjects, 14. Yahalmacalar, 15. Ashiq baglashmas.
