Abstract:
The village of Zeydar is located 65 kilometers north of Shirvan and, due to the name and fame of Shihab al-Din Mohammad Kharandzi Zeydari Naswi, the author of the books Sīrat Jalal al-Din Minkabarni and Nafthat al-Masdur, it is a significant and identifiable location. Zeydar is not mentioned in ancient sources, and the Zeydari lineage was first mentioned by Reza Qoli Khan Hedayat with reference to its mention in Nafthat al-Masdur. Zeydar, Sarani, and Taftazan were part of the Qoshkhaneh district of Shirvan (lower Khoboshan province) and belonged to Nasa until before the ninth century. The ancient Kharandz Castle, the birthplace of Shihab al-Din Mohammad, is located near the village of Zeydar on the highest castle of the Zeydar mountains in the Kopet Dag range, near the border of Iran and Turkmenistan. Despite the clues, precise descriptions, and references by Shihab al-Din Mohammad regarding the mountains surrounding the village of Zeydar, this castle remains unknown under the name Kharandz and has not been nationally registered. The name of Kharandz Castle appears five times with references and descriptions of its surroundings in the history of Sīrat Jalal al-Din, which tells of Shihab al-Din Mohammad's attachment to his ancestral castle. Locating the fortified and difficult-to-access Kharandz Castle is necessary for studying the historical events of the Mongol invasion and writing the biography of Shihab al-Din Mohammad Kharandzi, the historian and scribe of Sultan Jalal al-Din Khwarazmshah's court. Local researchers from Shirvan and Quchan (Moqimi and Attaradi) have incorrectly identified the location of Kharandz Castle as Qarandareh Taftazan (Qarandareh), based on the recording of 'Kharandar' in the translation of the Arabic text of Sīrat Jalal al-Din. The achievements of this essay include the correct localization, identification, and proposal for the national registration of the aforementioned castle under the name Kharandz, which is known today among the local people as 'Qezel Qaleh'.
