Abstract:
Proverbs are indicators of the ethnic culture of each society, and by reflecting on them, one can reach a deeper and clearer image of that society. The purpose of the present research, in this regard, has been the collection and interpretation of a set of Balochi proverbs that mostly focus on the values, beliefs, and convictions of the Balochi people regarding the family and specifically gender relations. To this end, two methods—library studies and field studies—have been used. Additionally, to better analyze the research materials, we have employed an interpretive approach. In this direction, the reading of Balochi proverbs in connection with the subject under discussion has led to the enumeration of seven central categories: 0( dominance and continuity of the patrilineal and patriarchal system; 8( ethnocentric kinship and the continuity of clan structures; 3( sanctification and valuing the role of parents in the upbringing and socialization of children; 4( hospitality and the prominence of responsible social communications; 5( respect and honoring the elderly and seniors; 0( emphasis on the importance of the maternal position and status; 7( the view of women in the shadow of men. In total, the research findings show that among the general Balochi population, due to the lack of prevalence of written Balochi language, folk literature and especially proverbs play a significant role in socialization, the upbringing of generations, intergenerational transmission, identity recognition, reproduction, and consolidation of kinship and gender values, and in this respect, they are considered among the cultural tools for preserving and continuing the identity and culture of the Balochi people.
