153 In recent years, using of university spin-offs as an interface between universities and industry for technology commercialization has gained special attention of strategists and policy makers. The law passed in support of university spin-offs through its bylaws clearly states the needs for enabling technological entrepreneurship in universities. Therefore, for deep understanding about the creation and growth of university spin-offs in Iran, in this paper, based on grounded theory and deep interview with toenty CEO’s and board of director’s members of fourthin firms in Sharif University incubator, Tehran University incubator and Tehran University science park, this study tried to find out some disciplines to create the growth model of firms. In conclusion, this study identified fourty factors as difficulties, and through the focus group method, seven problems were selected as main topics throughout the life cycle of university spin-offs in Iran. However, these problems explain seven challenges for the growth of university spin-offs in Iran. Thus, based on the dominant problem approach, these challenges were used as the basis for the development of proposed seven stages growth model.
Machine summary:
As a result of this research, after identifying forty concepts under the title of problems of university spin-off companies in the growth path, and relying on the focus group method, seven key challenges in the growth path of university spin-off companies were identified, which have become the basis for formulating the stages of a seven-stage growth model based on the predominant problems approach.
This is because without having sufficient knowledge of the key problems and challenges facing these types of companies, it will not be possible to prepare effective supports for the growth and development of university spin-off companies.
For this reason, in this article, in order to create a more accurate understanding of the nature of these types of companies and the problems they face in their path of growth and evolution, the formulation of a multi-stage growth model with a dominant problems approach3 has been considered to identify the problems and challenges facing these types of companies in the Iranian business environment.
Evidence suggests that if there is an intention to develop a stage growth model based on the dominant problems approach, developing a model based on the contingencies of the business environment in Iran will have greater effectiveness by helping to more accurately identify the challenges of university spin-off companies.
Given all the conditions that have influenced the business of companies in this stage, spin-off companies focus on core ideas by relying on their technical knowledge and, while applying some innovations to the product and increasing product complexity, will also seek to identify new capacities inherent in the product or their technological assets.
