Abstract:
The census was one of the manifestations of the progressive movement aimed at reforming the tax system in the Naseri era. This research, by referring to the "Naseri Collection" booklet and comparing it with other sources, describes and analyzes the trends of increasing and decreasing urban and rural populations, as well as the structure of the demographic geography of central neighborhoods and the occupational and religious approaches of the city's inhabitants based on the census. This research shows that after the Mongol invasion of Qom and its destruction, resulting in a decrease in the city's population, the city received developmental attention and its population increased during the Safavid and Qajar periods. During the reign of Nasir al-Din Shah, within a decade, the urban population increased by 60%, but the famine of 1288 AH reduced the city's population by 30%. This research analyzes and explains the demographic transformations of the city of Qom during the time of Nasir al-Din Shah, and the status and causes of the urban and rural demographic fluctuations of this city.
Machine summary:
This research, by referencing the "Naseri Collection" booklet and comparing it with other sources, aims to describe and analyze the trends of increase and decrease in urban and rural populations, as well as the demographic geography of central neighborhoods and the occupational and religious approaches of the city's inhabitants based on the census.
The population statistics of the city of Qom in the sources of Western travelers during the Safavid and Qajar periods received attention, but from the time of Naser al-Din Shah, due to the increasing seriousness of the government's centralization policies and the subsequent importance of taxation issues, the subject of estimating the total population of the country also came to the attention of government officials.
Accordingly, during the reign of Naser al-Din Shah, several population census booklets were written about the city of Qom, and these demographic statistics provide important information to researchers that has not been addressed independently and accurately until now.
Urban population transformations of Qom in the era of Naser al-Din Shah After the end of the civil wars during the Afsharid and Zand periods and the rise of the Qajar rule, relative stability was created in the country, the rapid trend of population decline stopped, and from then on, the city of Qom came under the attention of the rulers.
The booklet "Population Numbers of the Inhabitants of Dar al-Iman Qom" from the year 1285 AH, the first existing census in the Naseri Collection, is the most important report related to Qom because it contains the details of the house-by-house census of the city (John Carnaby 1380: Vol 2, 88).
