Fortification in Lorestan and its Security Function during the First Pahlavi Era Mohsen Rahmati * Mohammad Dalvand** Abstract The era of Reza Shah was a new period for creating developmental projects aimed at modernization in social and economic dimensions across various regions of the country, including Lorestan.
2. Fortification in Lorestan before the rise of Reza Khan The construction of forts as military structures has an ancient history in Iran, and Iranian governments throughout many centuries have undertaken the construction of numerous forts to defend territorial integrity and establish security in various regions under their control.
What the military personnel did upon their initial arrival to prepare this structure did not go beyond cleaning usable rooms, trenching, and creating military fortifications (Dalvand, 1388: 113), because undoubtedly this fort was not in a suitable condition on the eve of Reza Khan's rise due to insecurity and chaos in the region, and upon the army's entry into Lorestan, only its western side was standing (Mohammadi, 1379: 13) until it underwent fundamental renovation in the year 1307 SH; so much so that in Khordad of the same year, workers from Hamedan and Borujerd were dispatched to Khorramabad to work on the fort (Archive of Documents and National Library of the West of the Country/ Hamedan, Document No. 91/280/147).
During the era of Reza Shah, the military importance of this region increased, to the extent that a fort consisting of forty-four rooms was constructed on the private lands of this area (Razmara, 1320: 268; National Archives and Library Organization, Document No. 99-120-240).
