Abstract:
In this research, the investigation of the status and causes of suicide over a 5-year period from Farvardin 1384 to Esfand 1388 in Izeh County was set as the main subject and objective of the study. Data were collected by examining 40 files related to 26 men and 13 women who had committed suicide, using a prepared checklist, and were then analyzed with the help of SPSS software. The research findings showed that the average age of suicide was about 30 years. In terms of timing, 60 percent of suicides occurred in the early night or at dawn. Of the total people who committed suicide, 65 percent were men, 70 percent were city residents, 100 percent were poor and economically from the lower class, and 80 percent used the hanging method for suicide. Investigations showed that the most important causes of suicide in the research area included family disputes and lack of stability and lack of strong values and family cohesion with 35 percent, economic problems and unfavorable conditions with 30 percent, history of physical and mental illnesses with 55 percent, weakness of religious and spiritual beliefs and disregard for religious values with 50 percent, and unkindness and lack of attention from parents and surroundings to the individual with 40 percent frequency, had the most impact on suicides. Reviewing the research findings to find answers to the questions showed that adolescence and youth, being single and not having a spouse, illiteracy and low literacy, unemployment and lack of proper income and economic poverty, and having a history of distressing physical and mental illness with percentages higher than the average, were among the most important factors that caused suicide in the research area.

Tyler (1376) considers unsolvable problems such as unemployment, poverty, and economic hardship; Tabataba'i (1384) childhood depression and decrease in family stability; Klemann (1376), quoting Farber and Wilmott (1970), loss of foresight; Ashayidman (1378) psychological needs in the failure to receive love and acceptance; Rais Dana (1380), quoting Freud (1917), the attention of the death instinct toward the individual; Keynia, quoting Lombroso (1876), gender and climatic conditions; Rafie Pour (78) economic poverty; Durkheim (78) society, social systems, and the weakness of religious beliefs; and Sotoudeh (1376) personality characteristics and economic conditions as factors that play a role in individuals' inclination toward suicide.
Based on the contents of the files, it seems that the most important factors that played a role in suicides in this county are as follows: Family poverty and economic problems played a role in more than 80 percent of suicides; according to the research of Kaldi and Ground (78) in Koohdasht and Mohammadi (78) in Lorestan, it was determined that suicide was a consequence of economic and social causes and most suicides occurred in the lower classes, which was consistent with the findings of this research.
