Abstract:
This research focuses on the subject of 'masculinity' in Iranian-Persian rap music and therefore falls within the interdisciplinary field of 'Men's Studies.' In Men's Studies, various 'masculinities' are discussed, which differ across different times and places; thus, masculinity can be considered a social construct. Among the theories in the field of Men's Studies, the theory of 'hegemonic masculinity' has been considered to evaluate its relevance and effectiveness for analyzing gender issues in Iran. For the research method, Greimas's actantial model, which is a pattern for narrative analysis, has been used. Based on this, 14 narratives of masculinity were extracted from Iranian-Persian rap music, and the relationships between the actors in this field of research were analyzed with each other. The contradiction between narratives and counter-narratives, and the placement of men in the roles of narrator and primary and secondary participants, were discussed in each case. These 14 narratives of masculinity in Iranian-Persian rap are categorized into two spaces—hegemonic masculinities and alternative masculinities—based on their relationship with the social conditions of Iran.
Machine summary:
If we accept this theoretical assumption that hegemonic masculinities change in different social periods, then with a historical-sociological perspective, the forms of masculinity discovered in Iranian-Persian rap music can also be analyzed.
Discussion and Conclusion: The Emergence of Alternative Masculinities and the Challenge to Hegemonic Masculinity In this research, 14 dimensions of masculinity narratives in Iranian-Persian rap music have been extracted from the data, and no specific theory was intended as a theoretical framework to reach them.
