Considering the importance of oral and dental health in preserving whole body health, and the fact that oral health is the most effective factor in the prevention of oral and dental diseases, this study was conducted to assess the oral and dental health and hygiene status of teenagers covered by the Welfare Organization in Tehran during 1996-97. This descriptive study was performed in all teenagers aged 13-18 years (n=254). Variables such as hygiene status, gingivitis, DMF, malocclusion, and frequency of brushing teeth were evaluated and recorded in data sheets. Results showed that both oral hygiene and gingivitis were at a moderate level, the mean DMF was 5.5±3.6, and 85% had malocclusion. In this study, the oral and dental health of boys was better than girls. It was also found that oral hygiene and gingivitis correlate with each other, while no correlation was observed between oral hygiene and the mean DMF. Comparing these results with other studies performed in Tehran’s students and other populations, shows that the oral and dental hygiene level is lower in this group. We therefore suggest educational, preventive and treatment services be given to this population, along with continuous planning.
