Several factors are involved in the initiation and control of antibiotic biosynthesis. In other words, small molecules may act as co-repressors or inhibitors, and inhibit formation of synthesis of antibiotics. Therefore, the effect of these compounds must be eliminated before the initiation or antibiotic biosynthesis. Considering the above-mentioned issues, we studied the effect of adding glucose to culture containing Mycena sp. fungus on the growth and production of antifungal compounds, in a 5 liter fermentor, by two techniques: single-shot glucose addition and addition of glucose during a period of time. Results show that single-shot addition of high amounts of glucose (10 grams per liter) causes an increase in biomass concentration and a decrease in antifungal compound production. In contrast, if lower amounts of glucose (5 grams per liter) are added to culture during a period of time, biomass concentration remains constant, and the amount of effective antifungal agent produced increases.
