The purpose of the current study was to investigate the influence motivational and
cognitive variables on girls students achievement in mathematics using path
analysis. 113 third grade high school students majoring in mathematics in a high
school in Mahabad participated in the study. Students filled Middleton and Midgley
Mathematics self-efficacy Questionnaire (1997), Midgley et . al achievement goals
scale (2000), and Kember et. al academic engagement subscale (2004). The results
of path analysis revealed that the external variables of self-efficacy exerted a direct,
positive and significant influence on achievement goals, deep engagement and
achievement in mathematics. Self-efficacy had on indirect significant influence on
achievement in mathematics with mastery goals and deep cognitive engagement
being the mediating variables. Mastery goals had an indirect, positive and
significant influence on achievement in mathematics while deep and surface
learning strategies were the mediating variables; on the other hand, performanceapproach
had an indirect negative influence on achievement in mathematics through
surface cognitive engagement. The direct influence of deep cognitive engagement
on mathematics achievement was positive but surface cognitive engagement
exerted a direct, negative and significant on mathematics achievement.
