Abstract:
Jurjāni’s theory of verse is one of the theories which enjoys a special significance in the Arabic rhetoric. The reason is relevant to the development of dimensions, inclusion, as well as its attention to grammatical, semantic and aesthetic aspects. The theory, although having temporal preference over previous theories in contemporary linguistics, is related to most of them. In fact, there are a lot of mutual points between the theory and contemporary theories. One of these theories is the theory of situational contexts proposed by Firth. The current research, via a comparative approach, examines the two theories as well as their mutual points so that in this respect the strong and weak points can be determined, as a result of which the two theories can supplement each other and be useful for other researchers in literary-rhetoric studies. Among the findings of this research, it can be referred to as follows: paying attention of the two theories to situational context, the convergence of the concept of register on behalf of Jurjāni and that of context on behalf of Firth, the universality of situational context theory in comparison with Jurjāni’s theory of verse, the similarity of situational context theory and the issue of the appropriateness of address in the Arabic rhetoric.
