Abstract:
In the past, a vast area of eastern Iranian Plateau, extending from Lut Desert to Indian mountains, was called Khorasan. The area included lands beyond Oxus River in the north-east but excluded Sistan and Qohestan inthe south. The greater Khorasan included four quarters (Nishapur, Merv, Herat, Balkh) which today are divided between Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikestan. Only Nishapur Quarter is left in the present expanse of Iran and geographically corresponds with Khorasan Razavi and Northern Khorasan Provinces. Southern Khorasan is consistent with Qohestan which although in the old days was officially part of Greater Khorasan but geographers considered it as an autonomous unit. In brief, the old Greater khorasan and neighboring provinces of Sistan andQohestan have been one of the most important settlements in Eastern Iran. Its traces can be seen in both ancient and Islamic periods. Great expanse of Khorasan and its vicinity to two large civilization centers, i.e. India and China in the east and Central Asia/Russia in the north-east made this land a major crossroad of people, trade and cultural exchange in history.
