Abstract:
A significant part of psychological studies is devoted to the study of moral subjects. One of the latest theories in this field is the Social Cognitive Domain Theory. This theory, developed critically from Kohlberg's views, is now supported by a wide range of empirical studies. In this article we first review the main claims of this theory regarding moral cognition and moral development, and then introduce its points of ambiguity or shortcomings based on empirical and theoretical findings. The main claim of this theory is that the three domains of "morality, convention and personal" are distinguished from an early age, and each of them goes its own way of development. In this theory, emphasized on the role of children's lived experiences for moral development, and the factors such as interaction with peers, interaction with parents, and inter-domain interactions are mentioned. The process of the child's interaction with the environment (including parents) is seen dialectically. This theory, despite its strengths, has some theoretical shortcomings, including "understanding the morality and moral judgment, as a rational phenomenon", "inadequacy of criteria for distinguishing between domains," and "inadequate perception of religious norms".
