Abstract:
Myth and symbol have a common origin since the beginning of human civilizations and primitive man has expressed his relationship with the world through myth and symbolism. Therefore, thinking about myths and their symbolic nature is one of the most important human questions that has continued to be considered in ancient and modern times. Myth and its aspects are considered as the backbone and cultural and historical heritage of any civilization and have been the answer to the most complex human questions for many years. Scholars and historians initially thought of myth as a false myth and did not care about it, but since the 19th century, myth has been a form of fiction. Since understanding the structure of the universe, especially its most prominent extra-terrestrial elements, namely the sun and the moon, has been the source of many myths and legends, the myth of creation and the place of the moon and sun among civilizations is central and prominent, and each civilization views these elements and concepts Has given a symbolic face.
The main issue of this research is to answer questions such as what was the role of the moon and the sun in the myths and religious beliefs of ancient civilizations? How are the sun and the moon depicted in the myths of the ancient civilizations (God-goddess)? What are the visual signs in the symbolic representations of these two extra-terrestrial elements in each civilization?
A comparative study of the commonalities and differences between the myths and symbols of each civilization is the main purpose of this research. The research method is descriptive-analytical and this research is a case study based on the study of library documents to investigate the above issue. The result of the research acknowledges that many myths and rituals refer to such things as cosmic phenomena, goddesses and gods of the moon and sun, and various signs such as swastika and lotus flower or lotus, seal wheel, etc. have been common signs in all civilizations. The existence of common cultural signs, symbols and beliefs in any civilization indicates a close link between art and the beliefs of ancient civilizations.
