Abstract:
In his well-known and unique work "al-Kitab", Sibawayh collected
a considerable amount of Arabic prose sayings, which were considered as
the source data in establishing his version of grammar. Therefore, al-
Kitab might be treated as "a book of hearings".
The point of this research is to highlight the important role,
attributed to the spoken language and direct hearing from Arab
Bedouins. In this respect, Bedouns wrer treated as the original and
trusted informants in collecting linguistic eveidencies. The direct hearing
from Bedouins was ranked by Sibawayh himself as "the high ascription"
(alisnad al-’ali). For Sibawayh, his kind of isnad is much stronger than
the indirect hearing.
Through close and patient analysis of prose sayings in al-Kitab this
study yielded some important findings that relate to the linguistic
methodology of Sibawayh and the early beginnings of Arabic grammer
