Abstract:
90 Civil society, which is considered the highest form of society, is a system in which the duties of citizens are defined and participation is considered an essential dimension; however, due to various reasons, the inclination to participate in social affairs is not uniform among citizens. One of these factors is the presence or absence of trust at the micro, meso, and macro levels of the social structure; trust and participation, as main elements of social capital, are of interest to many researchers due to their direct and frequent connection with the social, economic, and political variables of society. In this research, we have investigated the relationship between these two variables. This study is survey-based. The statistical population is the city of Ilam, and based on multi-stage cluster sampling, 386 citizens aged 18 and above were selected as the statistical sample. The data collection tool is a questionnaire; the questionnaire has face validity, and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the reliability of all variables was above 0.7. In the data analysis, SPSS software was used. Based on the results, the higher the citizens' trust, the greater their level of social participation (0.37:3). Also, trust in generalized (0.58) and interpersonal (56.9) dimensions among citizens is at a good level, but trust in the institutional dimension (69.7) is relatively weak. There is also a relationship between age and status of individuals and their level of participation.

The results of the analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between social trust in its three different forms (individual, generalized, and institutional) and organized social participation, although the amount and direction of this influence vary in each case.
Thus, considering the mentioned theoretical foundations and relying on the thoughts of Inglehart, Offe, Lerner, Giddens, Putnam, Huntington, and Nelson, the conceptual model of the present research is drawn as follows: (refer to the page image) Based on the diagram above, the research hypotheses are designed as follows: 1- The higher the level of trust among citizens, the greater their level of social participation.
05, the correlation coefficient ratio can be considered significant; meaning that there is a significant difference between the level of social trust of citizens in the three dimensions of interpersonal, generalized, and institutional, and the hypothesis is confirmed in this case.
