چکیده:
Documentary research method is one of the main characteristics of methodology in research in humanities، particularly in macro-level sociological studies. Systematic and targeted use of documentary method requires knowledge of its epistemological backgrounds and technical aspects. Research documents and sources are a tool for understanding the meanings، objectives and incentives behind the actions of social agents and gaining information about social phenomena. The present paper is an attempt to prepare the grounds for introduction of documentary method beyond a mere technique through shedding light on the status of this method among research methods. Hence، besides explaining the different types، characteristics، applications، technical features and validity of documentary method، the way of its application، in five systematic stages، through giving an example about impacts of modernization on Iranian family changes، has been introduced as a case of study and practical guide.

Article Objective: Some social science students and researchers claim to use the case study research tradition or the historical method in their research, without being aware of or adhering to the epistemological or methodological foundations of those traditions.
Therefore, the authors, by mentioning an example regarding "the effects of modernization on changes in the Iranian family" (see: Erfanmanesh, 2013), have contributed to the practical application and the way of operationalizing the stages of documentary research.
1. The epistemological background and technical development of the documentary method Numerous paradigms and research schools in the social sciences deal with the examination of texts and documents, and the documentary method has been positioned among them as a common methodological core.
(See: Hall, 2003: 92-98) In investigating the effects of modernization on the Iranian family, efforts were made to use the systematic review method throughout the research.
