Abstract:
The aim of the present study is to investigate Journey to the end of the Night novel by Celine using Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The research question is whether Journey to the End of the Night is enjoying the source and target metaphor domains found in traditional diaries. If not, how such a difference is justified? His work is a frank reflection of comprehensive subjects like war and the insolvency of modern humans. In this way, Journey to the end of the Night provokes arguments and debates in France and Anglophone communities. Investigating metaphors by a writer, who is known by folk and colloquial style, may seem distinct at first. However, it can provide a complimentary recognition of the mentioned novel. In this study, ‘the contemporary theory of metaphor’ which is proposed by Lakoff and Johnson helps us to provide a new understanding of the notions of journey and life in Celine’s novel.
