Abstract:
The tradition of cloistering one's child in convents has not always succeeded in hiding the decision of families who, under the pretext of obtaining Divine Salvation, sent their children to convents for other purposes. In fact, with the intention of obtaining respect or a pension, to get rid of boys ill or infirm or of the dowry for daughters, to purify themselves of their past, etc. some parents buried their children in monastic homes. The latter became ecclesiastics there, perished there or committed suicide. Few were those who claimed the annihilation of their wishes. Diderot, who had lost his sister, condemned to the same fate, therefore began to criticize this forced monasticism in The Nun. We will see why the nun in this novel cannot flee this imposed vocation, what is the status of parental authority, which even exceeds that of the Church, in the legal system of France.
