One of the largest and eye-catching historical earthen Structures in the Iranian plateau is “Gurtan Citadel” which the contemporary man has paid the least attention to it. It is earthen fortress which was built on the watersheds of Zayandeh Rud and is five hectares in area. The aged fortress has 14 circular watchtowers around it along with tall walls for better protection of the inhabitants. It is located 120 Km. away from the east of Isfahan. It has been developed during Safavid and Qajar periods as the architectural types of several buildings can prove this claim although its primary nuclei dates back to some centuries prior to the Safavid period (around one millennium). The inhabitants lived there up to the first half of the 20th century but because of problems, they moved to the area out of the citadel. They use the remaining architectural spaces as stables for their livestock. Field investigations in 2010 show that a few number of families live in the citadel. They changed and reconstructed the spaces in an unacceptable way. Because of negligence, majority of spaces of this gigantic earthen structure –perhaps the largest mud-brick and earthen structure in Iran after Bam Citadel- have been damaged for example several arches, deep cracks in walls and ceilings, movement of walls, total destruction of one of the watchtowers and the like. This citadel was surveyed in 2007 and was registered in the Iranian National Inventory in 2008. After a general introduction, this paper tries to introduce the architectural identity and then focuses on the architectural components of the citadel to provide a better understanding for the readers. This article has an applied approach and historical-descriptive method has been used to carry out a case-study on Gurtan Citadel. Qualitative method has been used to analyze the data and field, library and archival studies were done for the investigation. The findings reveal hidden features of this citadel which are worthy of serious conservation. To do so, it needs a managerial program. Therefore, before introducing any restoration and revitalization plans, a holistic urgent care operation is needed for the entire citadel. It should be tried to prevent any further destruction whether natural disasters or human interventions in the citadel. This operation provides enough time for later programming.
